A Long Journey For A Weak Signal
Nestled between the Kwahu East District of the Eastern Region and the Asante Akim North Municipality of the Ashanti Region, Onyemso is a vibrant farming community with a population of over 10,000 residents — known for its maize and plantain farming and the beautiful Onyemso–Ogu Waterfalls.
Yet for many years, reliable internet and mobile connectivity remained out of reach. Residents often had to board a tricycle and travel together to a mountain near Agogo just to catch a weak 3G signal — whether for a phone call, online learning, business, mobile money, or simply reaching family.
Recognizing this challenge, RBKTekay, with technical support from Step Network, launched the Onyemso Community Network — bringing affordable, reliable, community-owned broadband directly to the people.
A Community Wi-Fi Hotspot, Not Just Another ISP
Three strategically positioned Ruijie RG-RAP6262 outdoor wireless access points deliver stable, high-performance coverage across the community — no outdoor antenna or customer equipment required.
Connect, Purchase, Get Online — In Minutes
Accessing the Onyemso Community Network is simple and intuitive. Users connect to the community Wi-Fi and are redirected to a secure captive portal where they can log in, purchase internet vouchers, manage their subscriptions, and get online within minutes.
Affordable internet packages generate the revenue that supports bandwidth costs, routine maintenance, infrastructure upgrades and future expansion — a community-centered model built for long-term sustainability.
The project is proudly sponsored by RBKTekay, whose commitment made the deployment of reliable digital infrastructure possible, while Step Network delivers technical implementation, network design, deployment, monitoring and ongoing support.
Every Deployment Teaches Us More
Onyemso is one of five community networks — each project grows our ability to connect the communities that need it most.
